MONTE CRISTO SANDWICH RECIPE
Craving French toast and something savory at the same time? Make this monte Cristo sandwich recipe! Gooey Swiss cheese and ham, sandwiched between golden and crispy French toast. This sandwich recipe is the perfect combination of a grilled cheese sandwich and French toast. Enjoy this monte Cristo recipe for breakfast, lunch or even dinner.
WHAT YOU NEED-
- Bread– You can use any bread you prefer for this recipe; brioche bread, challah, sourdough, French bread, or sandwich bread can be used.
- Meat– The classic sandwich calls for both turkey and ham, but this recipe only used ham. I like to use sliced honey baked ham from the deli. You can also add turkey breast and bacon for a heartier sandwich.
- Cheese– Although this recipe calls for Swiss cheese, you can use any sliced cheese you like. Cheese like Colby jack, pepper jack, mozzarella or muenster can be used.
- Egg– For the egg mixture, you want to use fresh eggs!
- Milk– Whole milk, half and half creamer, or even dairy free milk will work.
- Flavor– To season the egg mixture, this recipe just calls for salt and pepper. You can add another desired seasoning to the mixture if you prefer. For a kick, add a dash of paprika and cayenne to the mixture.
- Butter– For sautéing the sandwiches, you want to use butter to achieve golden and crispy French toast.

QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT HAVE:
As soon as you dredge this sandwich, it needs to be cooked, so I do not recommend that you prepare this ahead of time. You can cook the sandwiches ahead of time and just reheat before serving.
Once the sandwich is cooled, wrap or add a bag or container and store it in the fridge for 2-3 days. To enjoy, just heat and serve.
No! You can swap the ham out for turkey or for bacon!
You don’t want to skip the step of closing the lid, because that helps warm the filling and melt the cheese. Once the sandwich is cooked, turn off the heat and leave it in the warm skillet with a lid to allow it to melt more.
Yes! Spread the bread with some mayo and Dijon mustard for extra flavor!
This sandwich can certainly be air-fried! Add the dredged sandwiches to the air fryer basket at 350°F for 6-8 minutes, or until golden. Flip the sandwich halfway through.

Monte Cristo Sandwich Recipe
Ingredients
Egg Mixture-
- 3 large eggs
- 1/4 cup whole milk
- ¼ tsp salt
- ¼. Tsp ground black pepper
Sandwich-
- 4 slices bread
- 4 slices ham lunch meat
- 4 slices swiss cheese
- 1 Tbsp unsalted butter for cooking
Instructions
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt and pepper until well combined.
- Lay out four slices of bread. On two of the slices, layer two slices of ham and two slices of Swiss cheese. Top each with the remaining bread slices, pressing down gently to create two sandwiches.
- Place a large skillet over medium heat and add 1 Tbsp of butter, allow it melt and get hot.
- Carefully dip each sandwich into the egg mixture, coating the entire sandwich. Let any excess egg drip off, then place the sandwiches into the hot skillet.
- Cook on medium heat for 2-3 minutes on the first side, or until the bottom is golden brown, then carefully flip the sandwiches.
- Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet with a lid, and cook for another 2–3 minutes. (This allows the cheese to melt without burning the bread. Keep a close eye on them to avoid over-browning.)
- Once the bread is golden and the cheese is melted, transfer the sandwiches to a serving plate. Lightly dust the sandwiches with powdered sugar, if desired.
- Serve immediately, with desired sides and sauces.
