This lox bagel recipe is a delicious homemade smoked salmon bagel sandwich that will become your go-to breakfast, brunch or lunch! A toasted bagel layered with a cream cheese spread, flavorful smoked salmon, and your choice of toppings. This bagel sandwich is easy, elegant and loaded with all the right flavors. Enjoy this for breakfast, brunch or even lunch!

WHAT YOU NEED-

  • Bagels– You can use either store-bought bagels or make a batch of my homemade classic bagels or Greek Yogurt bagels!
  • Salmon– Be sure to use high-quality cold smoked salmon or lox for this bagel sandwich.
  • Cream Cheese– I love using homemade garlic and chive cream cheese spread. But you can use plain or store-bought flavored cream cheese.
  • Toppings– Have fun with your choice of toppings for this lox bagel sandwich! I love using pickled red onions, fresh cucumbers, and dill.

HOW TO MAKE A LOX BAGEL

This smoked salmon bagel comes together in no time, the perfect brunch or lunch idea!

  1. Mix all the ingredients for the garlic and chive cream cheese. (You can also just use plain cream cheese or store-bought herb cream cheese.)
  2. Slice the bagels in half lengthwise and toast them to your desired level.
  3. Spread cream cheese generously onto the easy toasted bagel half.
  4. Layer the bottom halves of the bagels with smoked salmon and your favorite toppings.
  5. Add the top halves of the bagels over the toppings to close the sandwiches. (You can also make four open-faced bagel sandwiches, if preferred.)
  6. Serve immediately.

What is the difference between cold smoked, hot smoked, and lox?

Hot smoking cooks the salmon fully, giving it a flaky, meaty texture. Cold smoking leaves it silky and soft. While lox is a type of cold-smoked, salt-cured salmon that’s saltier and not smoky.

Do I have to use garlic and chive cream cheese spread?

No, you can totally use plain cream cheese or even swap cream cheese for mayo or butter!

Can I make this smoked salmon sandwich ahead of time?

I do not recommend that you make this bagel sandwich ahead of time to avoid a soggy sandwich! For the best results, you want to make sandwiches fresh.

Do I have to use bagels for this salmon sandwich?

No! You can swap the bagels for crostini, baguettes, biscuits, etc.

How do I store leftover bagel sandwiches?

Wrap the leftover bagel sandwiches in plastic wrap and store in the fridge for up to 1 day. Do not keep these sandwiches longer, or it will become soggy.

Ingredients

  • 2 bagels plain, everything, or sesame
  • 4 oz smoked salmon or lox
  • thinly sliced red onion or pickled red onion
  • capers optional
  • freshly chopped dill
  • sliced cucumbers

Garlic & Chive Cream Cheese-

  • 3 oz cream cheese softened
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 Tbsp freshly chopped chives or green onions
  • ½ tsp salt

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, mix the ingredients for garlic and chive cream cheese until smooth. (You can also just use plain cream cheese or store-bought herb cream cheese.)
    3 oz cream cheese, softened, 1 tsp garlic powder, 1 Tbsp freshly chopped chives, or green onions, ½ tsp salt
  • Cut the bagels in half lengthwise and toast them to your desired level. (Toasting is optional, but I highly recommend it.)
    2 bagels, plain, everything, or sesame
  • Spread cream cheese generously on the insides of the toasted bagel halves.
  • Add slices of smoked salmon on top of the cream cheese on the bottom halves of the bagels. Top with sliced onions, capers, cucumbers and freshly chopped dill. (Use any of your favorite lox bagel toppings.)
    4 oz smoked salmon or lox, thinly sliced red onion , or pickled red onion, capers, optional, freshly chopped dill, sliced cucumbers
  • Add the top halves of the bagels over the toppings to close the sandwiches. (You can also make four open-faced bagel sandwiches, if preferred.)
  • Serve immediately.
