WHAT YOU NEED-
- Pie Dough– A classic galette calls for pie dough! You can use store-bought or homemade pie crust. (My go-to is to use the Pillsbury pre-made pie dough.)
- Egg– Egg washing the pie dough will give you a shiny golden pie crust!
- Coarse Sugar– I love sprinkling the pie crust with coarse sugar after egg washing to give the crust extra texture. This is totally optional.
- Apples– The best apples to use for this galette are a variety of sweet and sour fresh apples. Apples that are great for galettes, cobblers and crisps: Granny Smooth, Honey Crisp, Gala, Fuji, Pink Lady, Jonathan, Braeburn or any other apples.
- Sugar– To sweeten the apples, you want to use either granulated sugar or brown sugar.
- Cinnamon– You can’t have a warm apple dessert without cinnamon!
- Cornstarch– Adding cornstarch to the apples will help thicken the juices as the galette bakes, giving you a delicious gooey apple filling that is not watery.
- Lemon Juice– Freshly squeezed lemon juice gives the filling some citrus flavors and also helps the apples from browning so fast.
- Caramel– Topping the baked apple galette with caramel drizzle adds extra flavors! You can use either classic caramel or sea salt caramel sauce. The caramel drizzle is totally optional.
HOW TO MAKE AN APPLE GALETTE
This warm cinnamon apple galette is the perfect summer and fall dessert that can be in the oven in just a few minutes!
- Preheat the oven and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Dust your workspace with flour and roll out the pie dough into a 14-inch round circle, no less than 1/8 of an inch thick. Carefully transfer the dough to the lined baking sheet. (If you are using store-bought pie dough, open both pie sheets and knead together into 1 large disk before rolling out.)
- Peel the apples and remove the seeds. Slice into thin even slices, about 1/8-1/4-inches thick.
- Add the sliced apples and rest of the filling ingredients to a large bowl and mix until the apples are fully coated.
- Arrange the apples in the center of the galette dough, leaving about 1 ½-inch border all around, drizzle the juices from the bowl over the apples. (Arrange the apples in the desired pattern.)
- Fold the edges of the dough into the apple filling. (The center will be open and exposed.)
- With a pastry brush, coat the pie edges with egg wash and then top with coarse sugar.
- Bake until the pie dough is golden and the apples are tender.
- Remove from the oven and let it cool for about 10 minutes. (It will be tempting to skip the cool time, but you want to serve this warm, not hot!)
- Slice and serve warm with vanilla ice cream or plain.

QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT HAVE:
A galette is essentially a free-form, open-faced pie. It’s a flat, round pastry topped with sweet or savory ingredients, with the edges folded in slightly to hold the filling.
Peeling the apples is based on preference! I like the apples peeled for my galettes and cobblers, so I peel them.
For this galette I do not recommend cubing the apples. For the best results you want to use sliced apples!
Once the galette is fully cooled, store it in room temp for 1-2 days or in the fridge for 3-4 days! Reheat in the microwave and enjoy your warm leftovers!

Fruit Mixture-
- 3 large apples sliced
- 1 ½ Tbsp cornstarch
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- ¼ tsp cinnamon
- 1 ½ Tbsp lemon juice
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Lightly flour your work surface, then roll out the pie dough into a round 14-inch-wide circle, no less than 1/8 inch thick. **(If you are using store-bought pie dough, it typically comes with 2 pre-shaped dough sheets. Open both and then knead them together into one disk before rolling out.)
- Carefully transfer the rolled dough onto the lined baking sheet.
- Wash, peel and remove the seeds from the apples. Slice them into even slices, about 1/4-inch-thick slices.
- Add the sliced apples, sugar, cinnamon, cornstarch, and lemon juice to a bowl and mix until the apples are fully coated.
- Arrange the apple slices in the center or the pie dough, leaving about a 1 1/2-inch border of dough around the edges. (Feel free to arrange the fruit in a decorative pattern or simply pile it naturally.)
- Fold the edges of the dough over the fruit, pleating as needed to encase the filling. The center should remain open, so the fruit is visible.
- Brush the folded edges lightly with egg wash and sprinkle with coarse sugar for extra crunch and sweetness.
- Bake at 400°F for 45-50 minutes, until the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender.
- Remove from the oven and let the galette cool on the baking sheet for about 10 minutes before slicing.
- Drizzle with caramel sauce and serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or plain.
