APPLE COBBLER RECIPE

This apple cobbler is perfect no matter the season, but a must during apple season! Bubbly, warm cinnamon apples filled with a biscuit like topping, baked to perfection. Pair this apple cobbler with vanilla ice cream for the best fall dessert. Not only is this apple cobbler delicious, but it is also easy to make and will be loved by everyone!

APPLE COBBLER VS APPLE CRISP– Although these two desserts are similar the main difference is that cobbler has a sweet biscuit topping and apple crisp has a crunchy oat topping.

WHAT YOU NEED-

APPLE FILLING

  • Apples– You want to use a mix of sweet and tangy apples when baking! Great choices for cobblers, crisps, and pies include Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Gala, Fuji, Pink Lady, Jonathan, and Braeburn.
  • Sugar– To sweeten the apple filling, this recipe used both granulated sugar and brown sugar. Either light or dark brown sugar works, but we prefer dark brown sugar for deeper flavor.
  • Cornstarch– To give you a thick, bubbly apple filling you want to use cornstarch.
  • Cinnamon– Ground cinnamon adds warm spice. You can also substitute pumpkin pie spice or apple pie spice.
  • Vanilla– A splash of vanilla extract enhances the flavor.
  • Lemon– You can use either fresh lemon juice or lemon zest. This gives the apple filling some zesty flavors.
  • Butter– Either unsalted or salted butter can be used.

BISCUIT TOPPING

  • Flour– You want to use good quality all-purpose flour for the biscuit topping. My go-to flour is Bob’s Red Mill All Purpose flour.
  • Sugar– To lightly sweeten the biscuit topping, this recipe calls for granulated sugar.
  • Baking Powder– Baking powder is what helps the biscuit topping to become fluffy and flakey.
  • Salt– Enhances flavor without making the topping taste salty.
  • Cinnamon– Adds a touch of spice and sweetness to the biscuits.
  • Butter– Be sure to use cold unsalted butter for the biscuit batter. If you only have salted butter, just take out the salt from the mixture.
  • Milk– Whole milk works best for a rich, flavorful biscuit dough.

HOW TO MAKE APPLE COBBLER

This easy apple cobbler recipe comes together in no time!

  1. Preheat the oven.
  2. Wash, pit and peel the apples and then slice into thin slices, about 1/8 inches thick. (Be sure to slice the pieces into even sized slices for even baking.)
  3. Add the sliced apples and the rest of the ingredients for the filling into a 9×13 casserole dish or cast-iron skillet. Toss until the apples are fully coated.
  4. Add cubed butter over all the apples.
  5. In a bowl, mix the dry ingredients for the biscuit batter. Add the cubed butter and with a pastry blender or with your hands, crumble the butter into a clumpy mixture form. (It’s okay if you still have chunks of butter.)
  6. Pour in the milk and mix just until incorporated and a thick batter forms. Do NOT overmix.
  7. Scoop the biscuit dough over the apples, leaving small gaps for the fruit to bubble through.
  8. Bake the apple cobble until the biscuit topping is golden and filling is bubbly. Let the cobbler cool for about 5-10 minutes.
  9. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
