HOT HONEY RECIPE

Hot honey has been all the rave for some time now and for good reason! Whenever you want to totally elevate a dish, just use hot honey as a drizzle. This recipe uses only 3 basic ingredients to make your own jar of spicy honey. From drizzling over your pizza, making a wing sauce or topping your tomato toast, the use of hot honey is endless!

WHAT YOU NEED-

  • Honey– You want to use your favorite honey for this recipe. We recommend you use raw and unfiltered honey, but you can also use regular honey. For the best honey, try finding a local honey seller!
  • Red Pepper Flakes– We use crushed red pepper flakes to make the honey spicy! The heat level can be adjusted by the amount of pepper flakes that you use.
  • Vinegar– Adding classic vinegar or apple cider vinegar can be used. We add vinegar to the hot honey to help balance out the sweetness from the honey.

HOW TO MAKE HOT HONEY

Making homemade hot honey is so EASY!

  1. Add honey, crushed red pepper flakes, and vinegar to a saucepan.
  2. Heat on medium heat and bring to a slight simmer. Remove from heat and let red pepper flakes infuse into the honey for at least 20 minutes. Adjust the infuse time according to desired heat level.
  3. Add a sieve over a bowl and strain the honey from the red pepper flakes.
  4. Transfer the honey into a honey jar or container and store until ready to use.

STORING

Store the spicy honey in a honey jar or container at room temperature for up to 4 months! This homemade hot honey recipe is easy and has a long shelf life. We do not recommend storing the honey in the fridge, because it will crystallize faster in cold temperatures.

QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT HAVE-

Do I have to use crushed red peppers?

No, you can totally substitute the crushed red peppers for fresh jalapeno peppers or any other hot peppers. Just slice the peppers and add to the saucepan with honey and vinegar, with the seeds.

What is my honey turning hard and looking white?

This means your honey is crystallized, meaning the honey is changing into solid form. To decrystallize, just warm in the microwave for a couple seconds.

Why is my hot honey not spicy?

If you taste the honey and it is still more on the sweeter side, then you want to infuse the red pepper flakes longer. We recommend you infuse it at 10-minute intervals, tasting and seeing if you want to add more time.

Do I have to strain the honey from the crushed peppers?

Yes, we recommend that you strain the crushed peppers! If you like heat, you can keep some of the red pepper flakes in the honey after straining.
