WHAT IS A PHILLY CHEESESTEAK?
A classic Philly cheesecake is a sandwich made with thinly sliced steak topped with cheese in a toasted hoagie bun. It is popular just with steak and cheese, but also popular with sauteed green peppers, onions and mushrooms.
WHAT YOU NEED-
- Hoagies– Be sure to use high quality hoagie/sub buns for the ultimate results. I like to get my hoagies in the bakery section of the grocery store. You can also just use sub buns or even hot dog buns.
- Chicken– This recipe calls for thinly sliced chicken breast. You can also use boneless skinless chicken thighs.
- Mushrooms– Either white button mushrooms or portobello mushrooms can be used. If you don’t like mushrooms, you can totally leave them out!
- Peppers– I love using green bell peppers, but you can also use orange or red bell peppers.
- Onions– Either red onion, yellow onion, or sweet onion can be used.
- Flavor– To season this Philly, I use salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika! You can use any of your go to seasonings.
- Cheese– For the best results, use sliced provolone cheese. You can also use sliced Swiss cheese or Colby jack cheese. Shredded cheese can also be used if that is all you have in hand.
- Sauce– You must try spreading this sauce on the hoagies, it totally elevates the flavors and helps ensure you don’t have to try subs. The sauce is made up of mayo and ketchup.

Chicken Philly Cheesesteak Recipe
Ingredients
- 4 hoagie buns
- 1 1/2 lbs chicken breast sliced thin
- 8 oz mushrooms sliced
- 1/2 red onion sliced
- 1 green peppers sliced
- 6 oz provolone cheese sliced
- 1 Tbsp unsalted butter for sautéing
- 1 Tbsp oil for sautéing
- 1 ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp ground black pepper
- 1 ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp paprika
Sauce-
- 3 Tbsp mayonnaise
- 1 Tbsp ketchup
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine the seasonings, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika.
- Prepare the spread for the hoagie rolls by combining mayo and ketchup together.
- In a large skillet, sauté the sliced mushrooms, peppers and onions with 1 Tbsp butter on medium high heat.
- Season with 1/3 of the seasoning mixture and cook the vegetables for about 3-4 minutes, or until they are tender and lightly caramelized. Once tender remove from the skillet and set them aside.
- Add the sliced chicken and oil to the skillet and cook on medium high heat for about 4-5 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through. Sauté the chicken with the rest of the seasoning blend.
- Once the chicken is cooked, add back in the veggies and mix to combine.
- Turn off the heat. Layer slices of provolone cheese over the chicken and veggie mixture. Cover the skillet with a lid to allow the cheese to melt perfectly.
- While the cheese melts, toast your hoagie rolls to a golden brown in a separate skillet or in the oven. Once toasted, spread your prepared sauce generously onto each bun.
- With a spatula or spoon, scoop the cheesy Philly mixture onto the toasted hoagie rolls, evenly dividing the mixture between the four buns. (If you are not enjoying them all immediately, do not add the mixture to the buns to avoid soggy buns.)
- Serve your Chicken Philly Sandwiches immediately while it is still hot. Pair with your favorite sides and enjoy.
